The point is that by trying new foods he is helping himself without overwhelming himself. Does he like broccoli by the end of the story? He doesn’t, but that isn’t the point. Mom doesn’t punish her child but instead encourages him to try. The protagonist is sensitive to broccoli’s look and touch. What this character doesn’t love, however, is broccoli. It’s about a child who loves dinosaurs, as witnessed by the dinosaur costume worn throughout the book. We glean, from her interactions with her fellow wares, that AFs mimic being male or female, that they have names (bestowed by their manufacturer? it’s unclear) and personalities, thoughts, an interior self. When we meet her, she’s inventory in a showroom. Klara is an Artificial Friend, a lifelike but nevertheless mechanical companion for children: amalgam of sibling, plaything, and nursemaid. This isn’t spoiler-this revelation comes early in the book.
